NIMBY - Not In My Back Yard

Saturday 25th July

County business for me at County Hall this week mainly concerned 'Planning'. As a member of the 'Planning & Regulatory' committee, I was involved this week in some planning training ahead of a mammoth meeting on Wednesday.

Tuesday's training was most helpful. My business interests and CPD involves a lot of town & country planning, but it was extremely useful to run through the issues from the Surrey point of view and to be able to receive counsel from the professional planning and legal officers.

The meeting itself on Wednesday was very well attended by the public. Of the twenty four agenda items to be considered, several were deemed to be contentious and had polarised public opinion both for and against. Interestingly, the majority of these were where applications had been made for recycling facilities, which although deemed welcome overall, are not deemed welcome near to residential facilities. Fortunately, the chair, Cllr Roy Taylor kept the meeting tight and encouraged both members and speakers to stick to planning - and therefore relevant - terms, rather than the emotion which so often takes over at these events.
